Magadh University administration has sent a list of deans working at the Bodhgaya headquarters of the institution to the Raj Bhavan for appointment of interim vice-chancellor but uncertainty still looms large.
The list, sent on April 18 on the direction of Governor D.Y. Patil who is also the chancellor of state universities, consists of the names of deans of six faculties and 62 professors. The governor will choose one of the deans as the interim vice-chancellor.
But the campus is rife with controversy over the appointment of the current interim vice-chancellor C.P. Singh, who took charge after a notification issued by registrar D.K. Yadav on March 23. Singh was earlier the dean of humanities.
The notification was in the light of a Supreme Court judgment on March 18 cancelling the appointment of all vice-chancellors and pro-vice-chancellors made by former governor Devanand Konwar. Singh’s appointment has sparked controversy as his term as dean ended on March 22. But no new dean has been appointed, as the university does not have a vice-chancellor.
Sources said owing to uncertainty over the seniority of the deans, Raj Bhavan could hand over charge of the vice-chancellor to the division commissioner. At least on five occasions earlier, the division commissioner had taken charge as varsity vice-chancellor.
