Residents loot Indian-made foreign liquor bottles from a car that met with an accident on the busy National Highway 2 near Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas district, around 165km south-west of Patna, on Sunday morning.Around 10am, a Swift Dzire bearing a Delhi registration number knocked down a scooterist (picture in inset shows the badly damaged car and the two-wheeler) on the southern flank of NH-2 near Subhash Nagar under the jurisdiction of Dehri Town police station.The scooterist suffered severe head injuries and fell unconscious. When passers-by rushed to the spot and tried to stop the car, it hit the road divider and was badly damaged. The driver fled.Some residents of the sub-divisional town opened the boot of the car and found it stacked with cartons of liquor. The news spread like wildfire and it turned into a free-for-all loot.A huge crowd assembled at the spot and people grabbed liquor bottles from the abandoned car with gay abandon. Police arrived half-an-hour after the accident, and seized between 70 and 75 liquor bottles from the car.They said the consignment was headed to an unknown destination from Sasaram, the district headquarters of Rohtas."The identity of the people who escaped with liquor bottles is being ascertained," said Dehri deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Mohammad Anwar Javed. He added stern action would be taken against the offenders."Instructions have been given to the Dehri Town police station house officer to ascertain the identity of the owner of the car transporting liquor defying prohibition," the DSP told The Telegraph.The police later identified the injured scooterist as Ram Adhar Singh, a resident of Subhash Nagar.
