The district transport officer (DTO) on Tuesday cancelled the licences of 35 people for the next three months for violating traffic rules under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The action was taken after Patna traffic police had recommended cancellation of driving licences of over 100 people. Traffic superintendent of police Rajiv Mishra, in a joint news meet with Patna DTO Dinesh Kumar Rai made the announcement on Tuesday.

A list of the violators was submitted to the district transport department officials to initiate action under Section 19 of the act on June 21, 2014 This was perhaps, for the first time, that such a proposal was sent to the DTO to initiate action.

A scrutiny of the rest of the violators is underway and appropriate action would be taken soon.

“We had sent the list of violators to the DTO and action was taken against them. These people had violated norms and disturbed traffic flow by parking vehicles on wrong sides of different streets, mainly at Boring Road, Exhibition Road, Station Road, Dakbungalow and Bailey Road,” said Mishra.

He added that two new cranes had arrived to tow away wrongly parked vehicles and were being used in the city.

When The Telegraph asked Mishra as to what the violators would have to do now, he said: “Notices were served on the violators and they have been asked to appear before the DTO, who would conduct hearings of the complaints on a regular basis.”

On the process of action initiated against the violators, Dinesh said: “We ask them to appear before us and if he/she fails to appear on the scheduled date, we send them reminders. Even then if the one does not appear and seems reluctant to do so, we start the process of cancellation of his/her driving licences.”

He said: “If these violators repeat the offence in future, their licences would be cancelled permanently. Apart from these offenders, 185 people were let off with a warning after they furnished documents concerned and a valid reason for parking their vehicles on the wrong side.”

A source in the transport department said new permits would not be given to any autorickshaw in the urban areas of Patna with immediate effect. According to sources, routes of city buses would be revised and a review would be conducted to curtail their numbers if more than required vehicles were found on any route.
