Girls of Magadh Mahila College and Patna Women’s College will, in a couple of weeks, proceed to Banaras Hindu University next month for the East Zone Inter-University Basketball Tournament.

A 13-member team has been formed after a final selection match between the two institutions on Friday.

Magadh Mahila College defeated Patna Women’s College 14-12. What made the victory sweet was it came at home for the Magadh Mahila College girls. A nail-biting match, the teams were tied at eight points in the first half. In the second half, though, the home team dominated the opponents and won 14-12.

The Patna University sports board picked players from both teams based on performance for the inter-university tourney.

The East Zone Inter-University Basketball Tournament is scheduled from November 3-7 at Banaras Hindu University.

Members of the sports board picked another 13-member team for the East Zone Inter-University Men’s Football Tournament in Mizoram.

Patna College won the final selections match against Patna Science College.

The inter-university team, with members from Patna College, Patna Science College, BN College and Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, proceeded to Mizoram University for the tournament from October 20-25.

Suheli, the sports board secretary, said: “The teams have been selected based on the performance of the players and includes students from all prominent colleges of Patna University.”

Creative spark

Most institutions in the city embraced the festive spirit in the run-up to Diwali.

On Saturday, the BCom department of Magadh Mahila College organised a Diwali mela. Students from the different departments set up stalls for designer diyas and candles on the campus. Foodies had a lot to choose from as well.

“This Diwali mela is aimed at instilling business acumen among our students. The students have tried to use innovative ideas to sell as many products as they can. Their marketing skills are being called for here,” said principal Dolly Sinha.

She added: “Many of the items at the stalls have been made by the students. This event has given them the opportunity to display their creativity.”

History student Puja Kumari said: “We sold products worth around Rs 1,200 within 45 minutes of opening our stall.”

Happy at home

Not to be left behind in the Diwali fever was Sri Arvind Mahila College.

The students displayed their creative skills in a Diwali Milan programme on Saturday.

Around 100 students from the college made rangolis and gharondas (building or home model) on the campus as part of the event.

Kriti Raj, a Part I student who took part in the gharonda competition, said: “This is my first year in college and I am very excited about taking part in this programme.”

Ice cream sticks, glass, plastic and thermocol were used for the gharondas. The rangolis were based on themes such as Shiv-Parvati and flowers.

Fresh faces

Song, dance and a lot of fun marked freshers’ day of Patna Science College’s zoology department last Friday. The seniors planned the programme for the newbies in the department and went off extremely well.

The first year students were welcomed with red roses and a chandan (sandalwood) tika on the forehead.

A ramp show, apart from other events, was held for the new students.

Fatima went home with Miss Freshers’ title and Sunny Kumar was named Mr Freshers’. Anshu Kumar and Ritesh Kumar shared the title of Best Personality, while Anupriya and Mohammad Amir grabbed the title of best dancers.

Clean sweep

Central University of Bihar’s Centre for Mass Communication and Media organised a cleanliness drive last Friday under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The faculty members and students cleaned the teachers’ area, classrooms and the computer and electronic laboratories on the campus.

Head in-charge Kinshuk Pathak said: “Keeping our workplace and public places neat and clean is of utmost importance. We all keep our homes clean but forget to keep our workplace clean. It is the duty of everyone to keep public places clean and tidy.”
