From David Beckham to Rajinikanth, there are a number of rags-to-riches story across the globe.
Meet Vatsalya Singh Chauhan, the son of a welder in Khagaria, who has bagged a job with a pay package of Rs 1 crore per annum with Microsoft. The 21-year-old boy, who is pursuing computer science at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, is one of the three students who have been offered a job at the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond USA.
Vatsalya will join as a software engineer from October 2016. He would work on programming and coding. He had to undergo three rounds - coding, written examination and interview.
"My parents took a loan of Rs 3.5 lakh when I joined the IIT," said Vatsalya, who had studied at a government school in Begusarai and scored 76 per cent in matriculation (2009) and 75 per cent in his intermediate (2011). However, he was not satisfied with the education system and persuaded his parents let him sit for the IIT examination. "The education system at Khagaria is very poor and I want to change it by starting a school in the district. I want to educate underprivileged kids. I believe education is the only source that can change everyone's lives."
Vatsalya always wanted to be a helping hand for his father Chandrakant Singh, who is a welder at Khagaria. His mother Renu Devi is a housewife. The family's monthly income is around Rs 14,000, which is not enough to educate the five siblings, including Vatsalya's three sisters.
He said: "Since I come from a very poor background, my parents did not believe me when I gave them the news. They were in tears and asked me to work hard and strive for a better future." Last year, Vatsalya interned at Goldman Sachs (Bangalore) for two months.
Vatsalya had secured an All India Rank of 382 in the IIT examinations.
