Chhapra, June 22: The district administration has issued notices to 34 persons, asking them who had given them the permission to build multi-storeyed buildings near Chhapra jail.
Sadar sub-divisional officer (SDO) Vinay Pandey served the notices on the house owners yesterday on the instruction of the district magistrate, Vinay Kumar. The notice has also sought explanation from them on why their houses should not be demolished.
Those served notices include some doctors. The buildings of Red Cross and Gurdwara Sangh Samiti are also under the scanner.
Besides the house owners, a showcause notice was served on the executive officer of Nagar Parishad, Braj Kishore Sadanand. He has been asked to explain how permission was granted to construct the buildings in the vicinity of the jail.
Sources said the action is the fallout of the murder of Dr Budhdeo Singh. Some jail inmates murdered him in Gopalganj jail on May 29.
After that incident the administration started talking about the jail security issue. Officials started visiting the jails after the shocking incident.
Saran commissioner Indra Sen Singh had visited the Chhapra jail in the first week of June with the Chhapra district magistrate and other officials.
Singh gave several instructions to the jail officials.
The Saran commissioner was reportedly surprised by the number of two- and three-storeyed buildings around the Chhapra jail. He expressed his shock over the issue.
Singh had pointed out that the jail was visible from these buildings and they could pose a “major security threat” to the jail.
He, along with the district magistrate, termed the situation as “insecure”. They had instructed the officials to find out how so many houses came up so close to the jail premises.
Following the instructions of the Saran commissioner, notices were served on the 34 house owners by the SDO.
