Patna, Dec. 11: Residents of certain localities can now call up and complain directly to civic officials if they find their areas dirty.

Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has extended this facility to localities under 15 zones it has selected to ensure cleanliness for Prakash Utsav. Pamphlets listing numbers of all monitoring officers are being put up in those localities.

PMC commissioner in-charge Shirsat Kapil Ashok said: "We have engaged officers in three shifts to monitor cleanliness work in 15 zones in which areas related to Prakash Utsav have been divided. Residents can call up the numbers to register their complaints if they are not satisfied with the work done in any of the 15 zones (under ward numbers 62, 66 and 67 of PMC)."

PMC has engaged 3,500 sanitation workers on the ground, while the private agency roped in for the same has engaged around 850 workers, including supervisors and managers. The PMC has paid Rs 1.65 crore to the private firm for executing the work. However, it has already earned the ire of the corporation for irregularities in work, inviting penalties amounting to Rs 25,000. On Saturday, PMC has also imposed fine on its executive officers of New Capital and Patna City circles for not ensuring cleanliness in areas assigned to them and failure in removing encroachments.

PMC is also installing temporary and permanent pyaus (drinking water kiosk) for Prakash Utsav. "We are making 19 permanent pyaus in areas near Takht Shri Harmandir Sahib and 100 temporary ones across the city. Around 50 decorative dustbins are being installed in areas near the shrine," added Ashok.

Medical arrangements are also being made in three tent cities, where pilgrims would be accommodated during the event.

Additional regional health director K.K. Mishra said a two-bed intensive care unit would be set up in the Gandhi Maidan-based tent city, which would accommodate around 30,000 pilgrims.

"The ICU will be equipped with necessary emergency care facilities. Private hospitals have been approached for the setting up of similar facilities in the two other tent cities in Kangan Ghat and Bypass Road areas. Moreover, 15 private hospitals, including Paras HMRI, Ruban Memorial, Jagdish Memorial and Shri Sai among others have agreed to reserve beds for pilgrims in their hospitals. All government hospitals in Patna have also been asked to reserve beds in their facilities," said Mishra, adding that the department was also making arrangements for around 2,000 units of blood in various city blood banks for the devotees.

"We have around 400 volunteers from across 38 districts ready to donate blood in case of medical emergency. Their contact details and addresses have been taken. Around 50 ambulances will be deployed in the city during the event," added Mishra.
