Several streets went under water as rain lashed the city on Sunday and Monday.

Though the intensity of the rain abated by Tuesday evening, the water remained on the streets much to the chagrin of the residents. Low-lying areas like Kankerbagh, Gardanibagh and Jakkanpur were flooded. Every nook and corner of Patliputra Colony was under water. Many vehicles were stuck in the waterlogged areas.

“Waterlogging has forced us to remain inside the house for the past 24 hours. The heavy rain over two days caused this problem but the civic body should be prepared to flush out the water,” said Ram Kishore, a resident of the Jakkanpur locality.

He added: “I am scared of falling into an open manhole. It is quite possible in such a situation.”

In Gardanibagh, five manholes were overflowing and dirty water flooded the roads. Most streets in the area went under water after heavy rain on Sunday and Monday.

“It is very difficult to negotiate a flooded street. There is every possibility of falling or losing balance while riding a bike,” said Saket Singh, a resident of Yarpur in the Gardanibagh area.

He said he would rather stay at home than risk his life. Walking in knee-deep dirty water was also anathema to him. “I would rather stay at home. It is horrible to walk in dirty water and slush. Our neighbourhood is not cleaned round the year and all the accumulated waste floats on the standing water,” said Singh.

The Kankerbagh area, too, especially Sector S, was flooded. Residents were annoyed with the continuous rain and the lack of civic services.

“It is very frustrating to face such a problem during the festive season. Waterlogging has added to our woes. I don’t know when the water will recede or the civic body will take any initiative to pump out the water,” said Balan, a resident of the area.

The civic body does not have any estimates with regard to the capacity of rainwater drainage. There is no separate storm-water drainage network in the city either.

Technical experts at the Patna Municipal Corporation claimed that they could drain out water from the streets in 24 hours if it rains up to 65mm between 10pm and 2am.

However, it would take around 48 hours to drain out the same volume of water if it rains between 2am and 10am. The process takes more than 48 hours if it rains above 65mm in a day.

Over Sunday and Monday, the total rainfall was 163.4mm.

Patliputra Colony was one of the worst-hit localities as water submerged almost every street in the area. Water entered some of the homes as well.

“I have asked the co-operative officials to drain out the water from my house and from the street as well. But nothing has been done. There is water in my house,” said Nilesh Sinha, a resident of the colony.
