Finger at jawan for leading robbers

Gopalganj, March 30: A head constable of Assam Rifles is believed to be the kingpin of a gang of robbers operating in and around the district, according to information with cops.

Last evening, Muhammadpur police nabbed a gang member from Siwan district after he arrived in Gopalganj to collect his share in a robbery committed last month. Police said Anil Sah, the gang member arrested from an area under Dumaria panchayat of the district, revealed the names of the other members as well as the kingpin, Assam Rifles head constable Ramesh Yadav.

Gopalganj superintendent of police (SP) Vinod Kumar Chaudhary said Assam Rifles is being contacted. Originally from Daraunda village in Siwan, Yadav is now posted in the border areas of Assam.

The gang had struck the house of Satyadeo Prasad, a resident of Karas Ghat Balua Tola, on February 13 this year. They fled with property worth Rs 25 lakh, including Rs 5 lakh.

Then SP Nitasha Guria constituted a team to investigate the case. Recently, the police received a tip-off that Arvind Yadav, a resident of Muhammadpur area, was working for a gang of robbers and passing them information on possible houses to strike.

The police put the 24-year-old’s mobile under surveillance and assigned policemen in plainclothes to find out his activities.

Muhammadpur police station in-charge Dharmendra Bharti today said cops found Arvind contacted Sah, asking him to come to Gopalganj district to collect his share of the loot on Friday. Sah was arrested from the spot, while Arvind escaped.

Bharti said Sah revealed the gang had around 12 members, who work with private companies. Originally from Siwan and Gopalganj districts, the members had criminal antecedents and had fled because of cases lodged against them. They returned to their places of work after committing the crimes.
