Commercial vehicles must display passenger limit

Students must tell parents to wear seat belts and helmets while driving and riding

School buses and commercial vehicles must have speed governors installed

These are few of the directions that the Patna district administration and traffic police issued on Sunday before road safety week begins in the city on Monday.

District magistrate Kumar Ravi instructed officials to campaign before residents the dos and don'ts to follow while driving vehicles on the city roads. "I have instructed the transport department and traffic police to ensure all commercial vehicles display their passenger limit," said Ravi.

Traffic superintendent of police P.N. Mishra said he finds it funny that people have to pay fine for their safety. He has asked schoolchildren to tell their parents to wear seat belts and helmets. He added that the traffic police have identified vulnerable spots in the city where accidents occur and steps have been taken to improve the road safety conditions.

"We have planned to spread awareness by posting banners and hoardings at all the roundabouts on road safety themes. We are taking the help of community policing and Rotary Club. Special focus will be on wearing seat belts, helmets and use of pressure horn during this week," Mishra said.

The transport department, Bihar Transport Motor Federation, All India Transport Workers Federation and Auto Union Association have promised to extend support to the campaign. In this time, the administration will stress on fitness of vehicles as well as involve students to organise street play and painting competition on road safety.

Schools have been asked to install speed governors in their vehicles and new commercial vehicles would not be given licences and permits without the device.

Special camps would also be organised at primary health centres near bus stands for free eye check-ups.
