Patna, March 8: The axe of expulsion hovers on former state Janata Dal (United) chief Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh and Koiri leader Upendra Kushwaha for alleged anti-party activities during last year’s Assembly elections.

The party high command today formally recommended “disciplinary action” against 10 MPs and dismissed as many as 114 leaders for periods ranging from three to six years.

Besides Lallan Singh, a Lok Sabha member, and Upendra, who is in the Rajya Sabha, other MPs against whom action has been recommended are Manganilal Mandal, Sushil Singh, Meena Singh, Aswhamedha Devi, Vaidyanath Prasad Mahto, Monazir Hassan, Arjun Rai, Mahabali Singh and Purnamasi Ram (all Lok Sabha MPs).

Most of these MPs fielded their relatives against the official party candidates.

State party chief Basishth Narayan Singh has written to JD (U) national president Sharad Yadav, recommending “appropriate” disciplinary action against these leaders.

Sources in the party’s disciplinary committee said action against the dissidents has been taken in accordance with the “gravity” of their wrongdoing. “Harsh punishment has been meted out to those found incorrigible,” a disciplinary committee member said.

Lallan and Kushwaha had questioned the disciplinary committee’s authority to issue showcause notices. Instead of replying to the notices, the two MPs wrote to Sharad Yadav questioning the committee’s authority.

Prior to the polls, Lallan had formed the Kisan Mahapanchayat, which called for dislodging the Nitish Kumar government.

Kushwaha abstained from campaigning to protest against denial of tickets to his supporters.
