Patna: The Opposition in the Legislative Council sought to put the government on the mat on Monday over deteriorating law and order, shouting slogans as they trooped into the Well demanding adjournment and a discussion on the issue.
RJD member Subodh Kumar came up with an adjournment motion over the issue and asserted that crime has reached its zenith in the state.
"Leave aside other districts, the criminals have become so brazen that they fired at the police in Kankerbagh area of the state capital and injured one of them. Similarly, a youth's throat was slit in broad daylight in Sabzibagh area. In yet another incident, a youth was shot dead in a men's parlour," Subodh said while demanding a discussion.
However, council's deputy chairman Harun Rashid, presiding over the House, rejected the motion and initiated question hour.
BJP MLC Krishna Kumar Singh raised a query related to Mukhyamantri Gram Sadak Yojana, which intends to connect low population habitations that are not covered under the Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
Replying to the question, rural works department minister Shailesh Kumar said: "Approval was given for connecting 21,103 habitations by constructing 30,791km of roads. The state government has connected 892 habitations by building 1,283km of roads in 2017-18 so far against a target of connecting 3,400 habitations and 4,000km of roads."
The minister added that 52,635 habitations are yet to be connected with all-weather roads, length of which would amount to 37,936km. "The government will complete the entire task by 2020-21," he said.
Ramchandra Bharti, who sat in the House as a JDU MLC after defecting from the Congress, raised the subject of lack of lights on the newly built rail-cum-road bridge - JP Setu - over the Ganga, which connects Digha in Patna to Sonepur in Saran.
Parliamentary affairs minister Shrawan Kumar replied: "Equipment like boosters, transformers have been stolen from the bridge. Indian Railways had taken care of its lighting till August 2017, but they later expressed helplessness to continue with it."
