Even as the BJP and the JDU inch closer for a joint bid in the Lok Sabha elections, BJP MP Dr C.P. Thakur is all set to leave the NDA government red-faced when he sits on a dharna in Gaya to protest alleged police atrocities committed on September 6.

On September 6, a group of upper caste outfits were protesting against the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

“I will sit on a daylong dharna against the police high-handedness and atrocities committed all over the state, especially at Siyaram Colony, located in Gaya district’s Bela,” he remarked, while addressing mediapersons on Friday.

He demanded that chief minister Nitish Kumar should immediately crack the whip on “insensitive” police officers, withdraw false cases lodged against everyone on the day of protests and hold a high-level probe led by a retired judge.

Thakur said he had toured the state and was shocked to learn during interaction about the atrocities and brutalities committed by the police.

He said the whole colony of Siyarampur in Bela was fortified and every household was broken into and ransacked.

“Young boys studying in Class VI, young girls and elderly women were beaten up. Everybody was abused due to their caste,” Thakur alleged, pointing out that local police officers were leading the attack.

Thakur said even the widow of a Kargil martyr was brutally beaten up and another young mother was also not spared.

“The lady was taken to the police station and kept as a criminal,” he alleged, insisting that he was told of similar experience in Nawada. “If the Bihar government does not show sensitivity towards this brutality against the common people, it will be a black spot on democracy,” he added.

The BJP is worried over Thakur’s move, as they have already faced the ire of the upper castes in Bihar which voted for them. Several BJP leaders have been shown black flags at their public meetings.

BJP leaders point out that Thakur’s move will further complicate the situation.
