Patna, Aug. 26: At least 12 people, including five policemen, were seriously injured when residents and police clashed near Chandika Sthan in Munger, 210km east of Patna, today.

Three seriously injured cops, including two inspectors, are admitted to Munger Sadar hospital. A police vehicle was partially damaged.

The trouble began around 9am when some residents attacked two houses at Chandika Sthan Sahni Tola and tried to torch them. Inmates who resisted were beaten up. Then Sahni Tola residents jumped in, leading to heavy brick batting. Six people suffered head injuries. A police team led by additional superintendent of police Harishankar rushed there but was attacked. Five cops were injured. Munger superintendent of police Ashish Bharti said six persons have been detained. The mob was protesting eve teasing of a Tikapur girl by some youths on Friday.

The SP said the situation was under control and additional armed police had been deployed as a precautionary measure. An FIR has been lodged on the statement of the station house officer (SHO) of Basudeopur police outpost, he told The Telegraph over phone.

Eyewitnesses said residents got infuriated over the police's failure to arrest the tormenters. The girl's family had reported the incident to the police but they did not initiate any action against the accused leading to protest.

Chandika Sthan Sahni Tola residents alleged that the attackers also looted valuables from the two houses before partially torching them. There was no report of any loss of life. The protestors also damaged two auto-rickshaws parked in the premises of the two buildings. Residents apprehended a reprisal for the attack. "We have requested the district police chief to continue deployment of police till the situation returns to normal," said Jitendra Sahni, a resident.
