Residents would soon have to pay for parking their vehicles on city streets.

The empowered standing committee of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday approved the proposal for a pay and park system in the city. It would be implemented at 51 locations on 17 roads and ensure parking space for 1,600 vehicles.

Owners would have to pay Rs 10 for the first hour and Rs 5 per hour thereafter to park their vehicles. The scheme got an approval from the PMC standing committee on Tuesday.

Sources said the PMC had requested the road construction department to hand over a list of parking lots along principal and main roads to it by December 2010. In September 2011, a preliminary list of parking lots was given to the civic body.

“The final list of the proposed pay and park lots have been finalised according to the provisions of Section 239 of the Bihar Municipal Act, 2007,” said a PMC official.

The committee also gave its nod to a proposal making it compulsory for all traders to get a licence from the civic body. All shop owners and street vendors would have to apply for the trade licence. While the former would have to pay Rs 2,000 to get the permit, it would be given for free to the latter. Meat and poultry sellers would also have to apply for licences.

The civic body has already drafted Municipal Corporation Licences Rules, 2013, according to Section 342 of the Bihar Municipal Act.

The PMC also gave a no-objection certificate to the Patna Ganga Riverfront Development Project.

Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation managing director Anupam Kumar Suman made a presentation regarding the proposed beautification at the civic body headquarters in Mauryalok Complex.

“The proposals would be tabled before the PMC board soon to seek its approval,” said municipal secretary Chandrashekhar Azad.
