Patna: The three-day parole granted to RJD chief Lalu Prasad comes with a slew of riders, including abstaining from speaking to the media during the period that he is home for the wedding of his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav.
"If the prisoner violates this, his parole will be cancelled," the order of Jharkhand inspector-general, jail, Harsh Mangla states.
Lalu also cannot participate in any other function except the marriage of his son.
Under the parole order, Lalu needs to return to Ranchi by the second half of May 14, superintendent of Ranchi's Birsa Munda Central Jail Ashok Kumar Choudhary said.
Explaining why May 11, 12 and 13 would be counted as parole days, Lalu's lawyer Prabhat Kumar said though Lalu was released on Thursday afternoon, the parole period would start from Thursday midnight onwards.
"As per the jail manual, if the distance between the jail and destination is 250km or above by road, the first day is not counted under parole. Similar rule is applied during the return journey. The distance between Patna and Ranchi is some 360km by road," he said.
Some RJD leaders were grumbling about the conditions, especially the media gag on the usually garrulous Lalu, but police officials said there was nothing unusual about them. "He (Lalu) cannot be allowed to address public meetings during the parole period. Parole has been sought to attend his son's marriage," said a senior IPS officer who did not wish to be named.
