Patna: Begusarai police on Saturday night lodged an FIR against six named and 150 unidentified persons for lynching three persons trying to kidnap a schoolgirl on Friday.
Superintendent of police (SP) Aditya Kumar on Sunday said a case has been registered with Chhauraha police outpost based on video clips of the attack obtained from various sources. They confirmed the involvement of six residents in thrashing the deceased - Mukesh Kumar Mahto, Bauna Singh and Heera Singh - who had criminal antecedents.
Mukesh was involved in 16 cases of murder, robbery and extortion. According to police records, Heera and Bauna were earlier booked under the Arms Act.
The trio were lynched to death at Pansalla village after they barged into the government primary school and attempted to kidnap a Class V student from her classroom. Additional director-general S.K. Singhal had, however, said on Saturday that the villagers lynched the three in self-defence after the criminals threatened them.
"Mukesh has unleashed a reign of terror in the area. His elder brother, Nagmani Mahta, is a notorious gangster and is facing charges of murder, loot, extortion and kidnapping," said a police officer posted at Chhauraha under the cover of anonymity.
Begusarai SP Aditya said Chhauraha police outpost station house officer (SHO) Sintu Kumar Jha has been suspended for negligence of duty. Sub-inspector of police Amit Kumar, he said, has been posted as the new SHO.
He clarified that around 5,000 people were at the spot when the three criminals were lynched. One officer and four constables had also gone to the site on getting information about the alleged kidnapping but were chased away by the mob.
Authoritative sources said Mukesh had a tiff with the girl's brother in Begusarai jail. On Friday, he asked the principal of the school, Neema Kumari, to hand over the girl.
Director-general of police K.S. Dwivedi had asked the Begusarai SP to deploy armed forces at the village in the wake of tension prevailing there.
"We are probing the case from different angles. Additional armed forces have been deployed at Pansalla village to avert any untoward incident. The school will reopen on Monday," Manjhaul deputy superintendent of police Suryadev Kumar told The Telegraph over phone.
Classes were suspended after Friday as the teachers and students were in a state of shock.
Sources said the state police headquarters was trying to add a twist to the lynching incident as the Supreme Court has already asked the states to initiate steps to stop such incidents of mob attacks.
The day Mukesh and his accomplices were lynched, the apex court had reiterated that its order be complied with.
