Women robbed of gold chains

Bike-borne youths snatched gold chains from two women in the Phoolbagan and Lake area on Tuesday. Cops suspect the youths are drug addicts-turned snatchers, some of them being out on bail.

Anamika Roy, a Jadavpur resident in her 50s, was robbed of her gold chain around 5.30pm while she was walking down a lane off Purna Das Road. Two youths on a bike snatched the chain and fled.

Around 5.45pm, Reshmi Jain, a 30-year-old resident of the CIT scheme in Phoolbagan, was walking past a tailoring shop near BC Roy Memorial Hospital for Children when three youths on a bike snatched her chain and sped away. This is the second snatching in Phoolbagan this month.

Officers in the detective department at Lalbazar said gangs operating around parts of Chetla, Haridevpur, Kalighat and Tollygunge targeted unsuspecting women pedestrians. “Most of these youths are addicted to drugs and they desperately need money,” an officer said.

nSuicide bid: Metro Railway services between Dum Dum and Girish Park were disrupted between 5.40pm and 6.07pm on Wednesday after a 25-year-old woman from Maniktala jumped in front of a New Garia-bound train at Sovabazar station. The woman was saved as motorman Timir Roy applied the emergency brakes in time.

nMishap: The driver of a Howrah-bound Force Classic Cruiser ferrying 18 schoolchildren lost balance and hit a railing of the Howrah bridge on Wednesday afternoon. None of the children was injured. The vehicle has been detained. A Force Classic Cruiser has a capacity to carry 10 passengers.

nBlockades: Residents blocked Diamond Harbour Road near Joka for about two hours following the death of a 17-year-old boy. Nirupam Mal died after a Matador hit him on Wednesday morning. The protesters demanded the arrest of the driver. The blockade was lifted after police intervened.

Evicted slum dwellers of Nonadanga and some activists blocked Esplanade East Road on Wednesday evening to protest the government move to evict them. Police arrested 33 agitators and sent them to the Lalbazar central lock up.

nBail denied: A Salt Lake court rejected the bail petitions of Arun Maheshwari, the husband of former CPM MP Sarala Maheshwari, and their son-in-law Amitabh Kejriwal on Wednesday and extended their police custody by three days. The duo were arrested on June 10 on charges of fraudulently running a company in the name of a couple and forging PAN cards.

nBody found: The body of Mahadev Mondal, a 45-year-old construction labourer, was found floating in a pond inside the Benfish factory in the Purba Jadavpur police station area on Wednesday. Mondal had been missing since Tuesday morning.

nAccident: Three men died and eight were injured after the driver of a Matador lost control and hit a closed shop near Baruipur on Wednesday. The injured were taken to Baruipur Sub-divisional Hospital.
