JU staffer arrested

A non-teaching employee of Jadavpur University’s power engineering department on the Salt Lake campus was arrested for allegedly duping three youths of Rs 4.5 lakh. Chittaranjan Ghorai had allegedly promised jobs to the youths. The police are verifying whether he had cheated other youths.

Accident

Two people died and three were injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided with a small goods vehicle near Garia around 4.30pm on Tuesday. The driver of the goods vehicle fled.

Fall death

A mason working in a building under construction on Girish Chandra Bose Road died after he fell from the third floor on Tuesday morning. Mohammad Muslim, 40, was declared dead at NRS hospital. Officers of Entally police station have started a case against the promoter of the building, Q.M. Bala, charging him with causing death due to negligence. He, however, wasn’t arrested till late on Tuesday.

Flights

SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, will operate from Calcutta, airline officials announced on Tuesday. According to sources, the airline will launch its operations to Calcutta from July and operate four flights a week. Singapore Airlines now has three flights a week from Calcutta and both airlines will together operate seven round trips per week. SilkAir has flights to Hyderabad, Kochi, Chennai and Bangalore.

Train booking

The online booking for trains run by the Eastern Railway and the South-Eastern Railway will not be available between 10.30pm on June 11 and 5am on June 12 because of server replacement.

Cop task force

The superintendent of police of Howrah, Rabindranath Mukherjee, has formed a 20-member task force to curb crime in the eight police station areas of Howrah town on director-general of police Naparajit Mukherjee’s instructions. The state police chief had visited Howrah a few days back.
