Metro Railway will run special trains every 15 minutes from 8am to 2pm on June 12 for the convenience of candidates appearing in the civil services (preliminary) examination. On a normal Sunday, Metro services are available from 2pm.
Girl strangled: A jilted lover allegedly strangled an 18-year-old girl to death at her Shibpur home on Thursday night. The family members of Mithu Mishra alleged that 20-year-old Sheikh Jawed, with whom she had an affair, had strangled and then tried to hang her from the ceiling. Jawed is absconding. The girl was declared dead at Howrah District Hospital.
Airport taxi: The prepaid taxi booth at the city airport will soon be manned by police, airport advisory committee chairman Saugata Roy said on Friday. Roy also said garbage dumping and animal slaughter within 10km of the airport would be banned to minimise chances of bird-hit.
Snatchers held: Two men were arrested for allegedly snatching a gold chain from a woman at Gariahat on Thursday evening. Shikha Pramanik, a resident of Keyatala Road, was going to Gariahat market when 22-year-old Sujit Das snatched her chain. The woman’s cries alerted police. Sujit’s friend Pritam Dutta, 24, was later arrested for allegedly being involved in a similar incident.
Burnt: Five members of a family suffered burns when three cylinders kept in the kitchen of their Dum Dum house blew up on Friday afternoon.
Arrested: A youth, Iqbal Hussain, was arrested on Elgin Road on Thursday for allegedly selling pirated audio and video CDs. Police recovered 356 music CDs and 658 movie DVDs, worth Rs 80,000, from his possession
