Calcutta, June 12: The CBI today registered a case against three directors of a Calcutta-based company, including Mamata Banerjee's showbiz gatekeeper Shibaji Panja, after IDBI Bank complained that they had caused a loss of Rs 180 crore to it.
"The bank has mentioned in its complaint that the accused persons, directors of RP Infosystems, had availed themselves of credit facilities by furnishing forged documents related to shares and cheated the financial organisation," a CBI officer said.
Panja, who is no longer associated with RP Infosystems, could not be reached for comment.
CBI sources said raids were conducted at six places in Calcutta, including the offices and residences of the accused. "We have seized some documents related to the case. We have also seized laptops, internal hard-discs and pen drives," the CBI officer said.
According to the sources, IDBI Bank has alleged that fake documents exaggerating RP Infosystems' production volume had been submitted while applying for credit facilities.
The three accused have been charged under IPC sections related to cheating, criminal conspiracy and forgery of valuable security.
Kaustav Ray, one of the accused directors, said he was not aware of any case lodged with the CBI.
"If such an investigation takes place, I have no objection. Everything will be clear after the probe," he said. He alleged that IDBI Bank's complaint was part of a conspiracy to hamper the business of his company.
The third accused person, Bijoy Bafna, could not be contacted.
In February, Panja had been detained at Calcutta airport in another fraud case while he was returning from Dhaka as part of the chief minister's entourage. Panja was arrested by the airport police but granted bail the next day by a Barrackpore court.
According to sources in the economic offences wing, Panja had been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Jeevan Kumar, senior vice-president (finance) of IFCI Factors Ltd, a government-run financial institution.
Kumar had alleged that Panja, who was then the managing director of RP Infosystems, had procured a short-term assistance of Rs 18 crore from IFCI Factors by furnishing fake documents.
