A vacation bench of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday passed an order restraining the Sarshuna Biplabi Baghajatin Sangha from organising Kali Puja this year.

The order was passed after officers of Thakurpukur police station reported that the puja organisers had erected a pandal on private land on which the Alipore court had imposed a status quo. Two parties are fighting a legal battle over the land.

Robbery: A gang of five looted ornaments worth Rs 30 lakh from a jewellery workshop at gunpoint at Domjur in Howrah on Tuesday afternoon. One of the robbers was later caught. “There were five robbers in a Tata Sumo and two on a bike. They pointed guns at the workers and fled with the jewellery. The robber caught by residents has been identified as Intikham Ansari, 28, a resident of Bihar,” said Rabindranath Mukherjee, the superintendent of police (rural), Howrah.

Special trains: The Eastern Railway will run four pairs of midnight trains in the Sealdah subdivision — a pair each between Sealdah and Dankuni, Barasat, Ranaghat and Sealdah (south) and Baruipur —for Kali Puja.

The special train in the Dankuni section will run on the nights of October 26 and 28. The trains to and from Barasat and Ranaghat would run on the nights of October 26, 27 and 28 while the trains between Sealdah and Baruipur will run on the night of October 26.
