Santiniketan, Dec. 18: The baul singers of Birbhum, known for their songs on current issues, have started writing lyrics on demonetisation and its impact.

Khyapa, a baul from Santiniketan who has performed in Portugal, Spain and Belgium, has been singing about people's demonetisation woes at various events over the past fortnight. He said the songs had been such a hit that he was planning to write a few more.

"The Prime Minister's announcement of his decision was a rude shock for every Indian. The currency notes that made up people's savings of a lifetime became garbage overnight. That's what I tried to capture in my songs," Khyapa said.

Partha Sarathi Biswas, a fan of baul songs, said he had seen people requesting songs on the currency crisis.

Ananda Ghosh Baul, another well-known baul, has written a song on the queues outside banks and ATMs.

" Eki khobor elo rey/ Hazar taka, panchshow taka, kagojeyr tukro holo rey/ Shokal thekeyi ATM-e line, bank- e line manusheyr/ Eki khobor elo rey raat atta-ey, aat November- ey tey (O what a piece of news has arrived/ Thousand-rupee, 500-rupee notes reduced to scraps of paper/ People queuing outside ATMs and banks from morning/ O what a piece of news came at 8pm, on November 8)," he wrote.
