The bodies of two of the four teenagers who drowned on Monday while taking a dip in the Hooghly in Konnagar were found on Tuesday.

Around 7am, Avishek Chatterjee’s body was found floating along the riverbank in Uttarpara, around 3km from the spot where he had slipped into the river. Suindrik Ganguly’s body was fished out by river traffic police officers near Panihati, on the opposite bank where they had drowned, around noon.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem and later handed over to family members.

The four Class XII students of Xavier’s English School in Konnagar — Dipanjan Bhattacharya, Kishan Rout, Avishek and Suindrik — drowned around 9.30am on Monday after they went to the Baro Mandir ghat in Konnagar to take a dip after a game of football. None of the boys could swim.

The bodies of Dipanjan and Kishan were recovered on Monday.

“We had searched overnight for the bodies. Around 7am today, we got a call about a youth’s body floating in the Hooghly near the Uttarpara ghat. Around noon, our officers patrolling the river found the body of the other youth near Panihati,” said a senior officer of Uttarpara police station.

The recovery of the bodies left the families of Avishek and Suindrik devastated. “We were hoping against hope that our son would survive the accident. But the moment the police told us that his body had been found, my wife passed out,” said Suindrik’s father Sudip Ganguly.

Ganguly had told Metro on Monday that he had warned his son not to bath in the Hooghly.

The chairman of Konnagar Municipality, Bappaditya Chatterjee, said he would write to the headmasters of all 12 schools in the town, asking them to warn the students who could not swim against venturing into the river.

“The parents should learn a lesson from the death of the four boys,” said Chatterjee.

The chairman said he would approach all clubs in the locality to help the municipality deploy volunteers at the ghats between Konnagar and Uttarpara to avert similar tragedies.
