A 67-year-old man who was beaten up and dumped in front of his Howrah home five days ago died in hospital on Friday.
Dhananjay Dey’s sons have alleged that two promoters who are eyeing their rented house in Nandibagan Lane in Howrah’s Jagachha had got their father killed.
A murder case has been started against the promoters and their two associates based on a complaint lodged by Dey’s family.
Dey was found unconscious and bleeding from his head a few metres from his home on Sunday evening. He had been in a coma since at SSKM Hospital and died on Friday. A preliminary probe has suggested that the injuries were caused by blunt weapons.
The complaint lodged by Dey’s sons — Abhijit, 38, and Sanjit, 34 — names Lakshmikanta Karar, Biswanath Hore, Babulal Baul and Biltu as accused.
“Lakshmikanta Karar and Biswanath Hore have been threatening to kill us if we don’t vacate our house. Their associates Babulal Baul and Biltu, too, have been intimidating us. They have got my father killed,” said Abhijit, who works in a tailoring shop.
Younger brother Sanjit, an embroidery worker, said: “There are some people in the neighbourhood who have seen them (the accused) assault my father.”
Police sources, however, said officers working on the case were yet to find anything concrete against the four.
The house where the Deys have been living for seven decades as tenants is part of a five-cottah plot that several promoters have been eyeing, sources said.
The current rate of land in that area — barely 100 yards off Ramrajatala, from where one can reach Howrah station in 10 minutes and the heart of Calcutta in half an hour — is Rs 25 lakh per cottah.
