Imagine a skyscraper in the middle of a bustling city. Let your imagination run wild and let King Kong run towards it. Or consider Popeye trying to free himself from a rubble under which he has been put by his nemesis and archrival Bluto. You can let imagination hop, skip and jump when you take photos on iPhone and then put Apple Pencil into the mix while taking charge of an iPad. It forms the heart of a new Apple campaign called ‘Shot on iPhone photography + Drawn on iPad illustrations’.
iPad and iPhone together are a vibrant example of how technology and artistry can coexist in delightful ways. Take the case of influential British artist David Hockney, who took the iPad years ago and turned it to his advantage. The Yorkshire resident knows a thing or two about the powerful apps that can run on both Apple devices. He saw the iPad as a way for drawing by hand to make a comeback, rather than seeing it as a new technology that would take away the charm of making illustrations.
“The iPad is far more subtle — in fact, it really is like a drawing pad. They will sell by the million. It will change the way we look at everything from reading newspapers to the drawing pad…. This is the nearest we have to seeing what I would call a universal machine,” he told The Guardian as far back as 2010.
For the new campaign, Apple tapped 14 illustrators from across the globe who have been hard at work, selecting their favourite images and drawing up sketches with Apple Pencil. Artists like Jason Nocito, Anais Wade, Omkar Patil and Spencer Gabor are doing a brilliant job showcasing what’s possible. Suddenly, the mundane becomes a dynamic visual. Apple is highlighting what is possible with devices that you already have. Now find that Apple Pencil in your bag and start creating something to brighten up your week.
