Calcutta: The CPM approached Calcutta High Court on Thursday, seeking an order to hand over the bodies of the couple who had been burnt to death at Kakdwip on the eve of the rural polls to their family members immediately.
Debu Das and his wife Usha Rani Das had been killed allegedly by goons of the ruling party.
Police had claimed that an electric short circuit appeared to have caused the fire.
Justice Tapabrata Chakrabarty asked the petitioner to file a formal case in the filing section of the court and the matter would be heard on Friday.
The CPM had brought Dipnkar Das, the son of the couple, to the court on Thursday.
Appearing before Justice Chakrabarty, the CPM counsel, Sabyasachi Chatterjee, requested the court to hear the case urgently as police did not hand over the bodies to the family members despite repeated requests.
"The son of the couple is present before the court. He is yet to perform the last rites of his parents as the police are refusing to hand over the bodies to him. The son has been moving from pillar to post, but nothing happened. The court should immediately ask the police to hand over the bodies of the couple to their family members," Chatterjee said.
