Title awaits champion Mary Kom at home

Manipur to honour the six-time world champion after recent fete at the AIBA Women’s World Championship

Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh said the state government would honour six-time world champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom with an appropriate title for her illustrious career.

The chief minister made the statement while attending Sangai Fiesta, 2018, at Sangaithel Park in Imphal West held as part of the Manipur Sangai Festival.

He added in recognition of her marvellous feat on winning the AIBA World Championship title, the state government would bestow her with a title.

The title will be announced during a grand reception of the champion boxer once when she returns home.

Biren Singh said she has made the state and entire country proud with her excellent performance in the AIBA Women’s World Championship, New Delhi on Saturday.

Mary Kom defeated Hanna Okhota of Ukraine in the final bout of the 48kg category, to claimed her sixth world champion title.

Inspector-general Assam Rifles (South), Commanding Officer Maj. Gen. K.P. Singh, (YSM) on behalf of Assam Rifles also congratulated Mary Kom.

The IGAR (S) in a statement said, “The passion and hard work she put in her sport is not only an inspiration for the youth of Manipur but also for the entire country. Her success and achievement will encourage women in the state to take up the sports in a big way as a suitable career and act as a lesson for women empowerment.”

The Komren Union has also congratulated Mary Kom and lauded her indomitable spirit. It wished her a long life and more success in her future endeavours.
