The Axom Miya (Axomiya) Parishad organised an agitation against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, seeking inclusion of the names of genuine Indians in the NRC and withdrawal of foreigners tribunal across the state with immediate effect.

The agitation was held at Dhubri stadium here and thousands of people turned up for the demonstration.

The president of the parishad, M.Z. Hazarika, expressed concern over the plight of the citizens kept in detention camps.

The organisation demanded immediate release of all the persons in the camps. There are six detention camps in Assam.

Assam parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary had said in the Assembly in February that the state has 1,25,333 “D” or doubtful voters.

The Election Commission, during an intensive revision of electoral rolls in 1997, had ordered that the letter “D” be written against the names of voters who fail to provide citizenship proof and their cases were referred to foreigners tribunals in the state.

The D-voters have been barred from casting votes since then.

Asam Sahitya Sabha president Paramananda Rajbongshi was present as a chief guest and said from the very beginning the Sabha has been opposing the proposed citizenship bill.

He also urged the different organisations and political leaders of the state to refrain from passing any inflammatory remarks which may hamper the NRC update process.
