Tura: A professor of the Tura campus of the North Eastern Hill University (Nehu) has been placed under suspension for allegedly sending an inappropriate text message to a girl student of the university.

A Nehu official said on Monday that an inquiry into the alleged allegations has been started against S.C. Srivastava of the department of rural development and agriculture production (RDAP), who has been put under suspension from Thursday.

The victim had filed a case of sexual harassment against Srivastava with the university authorities in Shillong.

The behaviour of the professor had sent shockwaves across the education sector in the state with students and women's groups widely condemning the accused, demanding his arrest and termination from service.

A women's cell delegation from the university's headquarters in Shillong visited the Tura campus and met the victim, who gave her statement on the incident.

More students on the Tura campus have reportedly come forward to give statements to the women cell delegation against Srivastava.

University sources said more students from the campus had given statements to the delegation about the accused professor sending them inappropriate messages on Whatsapp.

The women's cell team that visited the Tura campus and noted the statements of the victim and other complainants also collected all other relevant evidence in the case. The inquiry report into the sexual harassment case is expected to be published very soon.
