Dimapur: The BJP's Nagaland unit has requested its central office in New Delhi to let Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearhead the party's election campaign in the state.

BJP state election management committee has forwarded its request to the central leaders for "star campaigners" in Nagaland.

Besides Modi, the list includes the names of party president Amit Shah, home minister Rajnath Singh, transport minister Nitin Gadkari, minister for information and broadcasting and textiles Smriti Irani, minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, party sources said.

BJP national general secretary for organisation Ram Lal and Northeast organisation in-charge Ajay Jamwal were here on Thursday and Friday to take stock of poll preparedness. They also held a joint co-ordination meeting with pre-poll alliance partner Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

The visiting BJP leaders held a series of meetings. An intensive moral-boosting session was held with party workers and candidates, Tovihoto Ayemi (Dimapur-I) and N. Jacob Zhimomi (Ghaspani-I), in their respective residences in Dimapur.

Ram Lal said party men must work hard to achieve the goals of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the development agenda and peace in the region.

The party has appealed to all to extend their full support and cooperation to alliance partner NDPP where there are no BJP candidates.
