Guwahati, July 17: Exactly a month after the Assam Olympic Association offered him the post, Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Barua today consented to be the chef-de-mission of the Assam contingent for the 33rd National Games.

Making the announcement here, Barua said he had been unwilling to accept the responsibility because of infighting and lack of co-ordination within the AOA. ?However, I had to honour the faith reposed on me by the entire people of the state,? he said.

While AOA secretary Mukut Medhi is making every effort to prepare a strong contingent for the state, some members and office bearers of the AOA as well as the Directorate of Sports (DoS) and the National Games Secretariat are not co-operating with him. ?The DoS is even not aware of the outcome of the funds it has so far released for coaching,? the Asian Games medallist said.

Barua said the coaching programmes were not scientific as no technical expert had been engaged. It was also difficult to prepare sportspersons without a target date in view, he said, adding that it was not possible to hold the Games even in January next year as the infrastructure would not be ?technically? ready.

The AOA suspended its ongoing coaching camps from today after Barua disapproved of them. ?Barring the 15-day netball camp that got underway here yesterday, all the camps have been suspended from today and will be resumed when the chef-de-mission recommends it,? Medhi said.

The camps had to be suspended after Dispur asked the state associations yesterday to choose between funds from the DoS for coaching or the AOA camp.

The DoS will release funds from the Rs 15 lakh allotted by Dispur as soon as the AOA camps are winded up.

The AOA also felicitated international spiker Abhijit Bhattacharjee and the Assam junior girls? netball team at the same function. They were awarded cash prizes.
