Twelve people have been arrested for Saturday’s clash between hostel inmates and residents in Madarpur area, while Section 144 was lifted on Sunday.

Five different cases were registered at Laheria Sarai police station. Residents filed two against Ambedkar Kalyan Hostel inmates for passing lewd comments and eve-teasing and the inmates filed two cases against residents for torching their hostel backyard and beating them up.

One more case was filed by the magistrate and Sadar circle officer Sailendra Jha, deputed to control violence at Madarpur under Laheria Sarai police station, about 175km northeast of Patna.

A minor scuffle between hostel inmates and residents over some purchase triggered the violence on Saturday. The residents, already angry with the inmates over incidents of eve-teasing, beat them up and torched a part of the hostel.

Senior superintendent of police Kumar Aikley told The Telegraph: “Section 144 was lifted on Sunday. The arrested persons have been sent to jail after being produced before the chief judicial magistrate in Darbhanga.”
