New Delhi: South Africa’s mindset has undergone a huge change as evident from their decision to field three spinners against the West Indies, left arm spinner Robin Peterson said on Sunday.

Speaking to newspersons after the Proteas’ practice session at the Services Cricket Ground here, the 31-year-old Port Elizabeth born cricketer sounded happy with the way the spinners played a dominant role in the seven-wicket win over the former champions at Kotla.

“I don’t know why they didn’t use spinners a lot more...they relied only on pacers,” said Peterson. “The mindset has changed now. We have three quality spinners, who are confident enough to perform at this level.”

Asked why South Africa didn’t use similar tactics previously, Peterson shrugged and said: “I think a lot has to do with the mindset, but we had a massive change and all the guys are excited about it.”

In the Kotla match, two South African spinners — Imran Tahir and Johan Botha — played a key role in restricting the Windies to 222, with Pakistan born Tahir alone accounting for four wickets.

The conditions in India, Peterson said, were favourable for spin bowlers. “I wish I was born in India...it’s a dream to play here. Back in South Africa, bowling is a big challenge. Here we can become more than an attacking option. All three of us (spinners) in the squad will love it.”
