MOHUN BAGAN 2
GEORGE 1
Debutant Rishi Kapoor's left foot spelt doom for George Telegraph today. More importantly, it fetched Mohun Bagan three points from their Super Division campaign-opener at home.
A goal in the red at half-time, courtesy a magical Sujit Neogi free-kick, Mohun Bagan restored parity five minutes after change of ends through latest Nigerian acquisition Abdulateef Seriki.
With every passing minute making the muddy park even more messy, a draw looked imminent - till the Mohun Bagan left-back pulled a rabbit out of his hat seven minutes from full-time.
As a routine Lolendra Singh flag-kick floated into the goalmouth, George central defender Amritalal Biswas was the first to get his head to the ball. It seemed a safe enough clearance, but Kapoor had other ideas. Trapping the ball 30 yards from goal, he let go an angular left-footer which whizzed past a stunned defence and crashed into the net.
The goal apart, Kapoor gave a good account of himself on a day when his teammates struggled to master the unplayable conditions - best described by George coach Raghu Nandy as more of a rugby turf than a soccer pitch.
The handsome Delhi boy - who spent a season each with Sesa, Salgaocar and ITI before heading for the City of Joy - was hardly tested at the rear, but showed decent positional sense and distribution skills.
Seriki, the other newcomer who served Tollygunge Agragami well last season, operated from a limited zone upfront and threatened the George citadel from time to time.
Crosses flowed in from either flank, targeting the tall Nigerian. One such sortie, emanating from the right, brought Mohun Bagan on level terms early in the second half.
James Singh's curling free-kick found Seriki on top of the box and, for once, his header had the power and placement to beat Shankar Dey.
With Basudeb Mondal watching from the press box - Mohun Bagan didn't risk playing him as he has excused himself from the national camp due to his father's illness - and Jose Ramirez Barreto policed by Dibyendu Panja, Subrata Bhattacharya's team sorely missed a gamemaker.
Barreto still managed to break free three-four times, coming up with trademark passes which went abegging. In the process, though, the Brazilian picked up a yellow card for elbow-charging his marker.
The accent was on crosses from the wings by overlapping wing-backs and medios, but the George defence handled those pretty competently. There were more high balls in the form of half-a-dozen futile corners that Mohun Bagan forced in the first 30 minutes.
The young George boys relished the mud and slush, running hard and tackling first-time to frustrate their established rivals. It was George who had the first real chance, in the 15th minute.
Prasanta Dora charged at the ball hastily and fisted it out straight into Supratik Ain's path. The striker, lone man upfront for George, stroked the ball a foot wide of target.
Eight minutes from half-time, Sujit silenced the 20,000-odd crowd with a superb goal. With referee Gopinath Pyne refusing to apply the advantage rule following a Hussain Mustafi foul on Panja, the George stopper stepped up for the resultant free-kick. From about 28 yards out, he swerved a right-footer high and wide to Dora's left for a stunning conversion.
The second session saw George go totally on the defensive, letting Mohun Bagan wriggle out of a tight corner.
