Mohun Bagan players will don a new-look jersey when they resume the National Football League campaign in Goa next week, but coach Aloke Mukherjee has warned the matches against Dempo and Vasco can be tricky.
“If there’s no drive from within, a change in jersey won’t make any difference. It’s time players should understand the situation and prove themselves. Any slip-up on our part may prove costly,” Mukherjee said before leaving for Goa.
Mohun Bagan, 19 points from 16 matches, will first take on Dempo on Tuesday and Vasco three days later.
Debkumar Sasmal’s return to action after a long injury lay-off, however, pleases the coach. “The availability of Sasmal is a great relief for me. He’s a strength in our backline,” Mukherjee admitted on Saturday.
Meanwhile, club assistant secretary Balaram Chowdhury said that he would sit with the special officers, looking after the football affairs, to sort out the existing problems regarding non-payment of dues to former players Bhaichung Bhutia and George Ekeh.
The refurbished inter-college Elliot Challenge Shield of the IFA will be held from April 12 and will feature 24 teams. It will also have Duckback as sponsor.
The tournament was established in 1894 and is one of the three oldest tournaments in the history of Indian football. However, there have been several hiatus. The last time it was held was in 2000, in Kalyani, and Kalyani University won.
Announcing this at a press conference on Saturday, IFA secretary Subrata Dutta said the knockout tournament will be held at the Calcutta University ground. The final will be held on May 12.
