Bhubaneswar, June 15: Police today arrested a 35-year-old woman for killing her husband, a railway employee, after allegedly being driven to desperation by his continuous physical torture.
The body of Haribandhu Das, 42, a grade B railway employee, was found today from his official residence at Mancheswar. He worked as a mechanic in the carriage repair workshop.
The police said the couple was married in 2000 and have a 13-year-old son.
"Haribandhu was an alcoholic. He used to torture his wife physically and mentally," said inspector in-charge of Government Railway Police, Bhubaneswar, Soubhagya Kumar Swain.
The couple had a fight last night when Haribandhu returned home in an inebriated state. "When Mamata, his wife confronted him, Haribandhu assaulted her. Retaliating, the wife crushed his head with a pestle stone," said a GRP official.
As soon as Mamata realised he was dead, she rang up his family members who reached the city this morning. Later, GRP officials rushed to the spot and found the body, while Mamata was sitting in another room.
The police said the deceased used to force her wife to invite his sister-in-law to his quarters at Mancheswar. They said Haribandhu used to sexually exploit his sister-in-law whenever she came to his quarters and this enraged his wife.
The police said that the couple's 13-year-old son was present in the house when the murder took place.
However, his mother moved him to her neighbour's house after Haribandhu started bleeding profusely.
The GRP has sent the body for post-mortem and produced Mamata in a local court after arresting her.
