Bhubaneswar: A Saturday night clash between two groups of Utkal University students spilled on to the streets on Sunday. Angry students blocked the national highway passing through the varsity demanding arrest of outsiders involved in the clash.

Police have arrested three persons, including a varsity student, for their involvement in the group clash that had left six injured. The police said two platoons of cops had been deployed on the campus to avoid any untoward incident.

The blockade choked vehicular traffic for around an hour on Sunday. Hundreds of vehicles and passenger buses were stranded due to the protest.

However, the tendency of students to block roads for any discontent has angered commuters.

"The students have been staging road blockades frequently and we are the worst sufferer. The students should not be allowed to halt the traffic at their will," said Archana Das, a commuter.

Only recently students had blocked the road to protest against the decision to allow Rama Devi Women's University to have a second campus on the varsity campus.

A woman died in September 2015 when Utkal University students had blocked the road blockade to protest against cancellation of student's union polls.

The Jamshedpur-based woman, Suman Sharma, 35, had died of cardiac arrest and breathing problems while she was driving her SUV. Eyewitnesses had said that the woman was frightened to see protestors approaching her vehicle. When she tried to take a U-turn, she fell unconscious in her vehicle.

Police said that most often students affiliated to various student wings of political parties stage road blockades over political issues. "All the student wings of three major political parities of the state are active on the campus and they block roads over political issues. We are forced to be lenient as students are involved," said a police official.

Deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi said they had been registering cases for road blockade.

"We have also arrested a few students in the recent past for violence during road blockades," said Bhoi.
