Bhubaneswar, June 30: Suspense over the mysterious killing of hundreds of sheep at Niali in Cuttack district has continued to create fear among villagers as two more sheep were found killed by the predator last night despite night patrolling by forest officials.
The villagers today detained the forest officials demanding compensation for the owners of the dead sheep.
While both the sheep were found killed at Baharana village, a resident of Majhikhand village was reportedly injured by the killer animal, which is suspected to be a wolf. The search for the killer animal continued today.
"We visited the spot after being told about the two fresh killings. We also searched the nearby areas. Camera traps have been put up," said range officer of Phulnakhara Himanshu Sekhar Mohanty.
The local residents have also alleged that the killer animal always fled with the entrails of the sheep. "The compensation will be paid either from Chief Minister's Relief Fund or State Disaster Response Fund. The quantum of compensation will be decided after getting a detailed report from the district administration," said the minister. spreading fear among the locals#
Forest officials said that the animal behind the killing could only be ascertained only by direct sighting. " We are suspecting this to be the handiwork of wolves but no one so far has seen the animal. It is true that the animals were being killed in bizarre fashion but we have to be very sure about the animal involved in the killing," said a forest official.
