Bhubaneswar, Oct. 6: Two students were injured in a post-poll clash at Utkal University late this evening.
According to sources, a group of students allegedly ransacked Gopabandhu Hostel and attacked an inmate inside the varsity campus last night. Today's violence is a fall out of last night's event, university insiders said.
It was alleged that the students who had attacked the hostel inmates last night belonged to Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) whose candidate Mahesh Prasad won the president's post in the student union election.
Sources also said that the inmate who was targeted last night was an NSUI member. After the last night attack, the NSUI members had allegedly attacked the BCJD group this evening in which two students sustained injuries, sources added.
The injured were rushed to the Capital Hospital and later released after preliminary treatment, according to university sources. Following the tension, three platoons of police have been deployed to avoid further clashes.
The cops identified the injured as Raja Nirmalya Prasad and Ajay Panda. "We are in talks with the university authorities and are planning to vacate the hostel to avoid further tension," said a police official.
In the student's union poll held yesterday, BCJD-backed candidates grabbed the top president, general secretary and vice-president posts in the university. Student union president Mahesh defeated ABVP-backed Gayatri Satpathy and NSUI-backed Ashok Nayak. Prior to the elections yesterday, both ABVP and NSUI candidates and their supporters had protested over the authenticity of Mahesh's candidature. They had alleged that Mahesh had police complaints in his name, hence his candidature should be scrapped,
