Berhampur: A 31-year-old doctor, Archana Das, committed suicide by jumping before a train at the Chhatrapur railway level crossing on Friday after being unable to bear the alleged torture by her mother-in-law.

Police inspector Sukant Bhoi said Dr Archana was married to Dr Anjan Kumar Das, 37, working with Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar, four years ago on December 4, 2013.

Dr Archana had complained to her parents, residing at Sriram Nagar in Ganjam, that her in-laws did not treat her well. She left the in-laws' home at Gajapati Nagar in Bhubaneswar on December 6 last to live with her parents, Raghunath Das and Kusum Prava Mishra, both teachers.

"My daughter, who had earlier worked with Apollo Hospital, was appointed as a medical officer at the Sindurpur primary health centre, 1km away from my house. She decided to stay with us," said Raghunath.

Raghunath has lodged a police complaint against her father-in-law, mother-in-law and husband. "Her in-laws had been forcing my daughter for divorce since few months. My son-in-law filed a divorce case in Bhubaneswar family court with 45 allegations against my daughter. Archana had been in mental stress since the notice was served on her 10 days ago. She was shocked as to how her husband could raise such 'false' allegations," he said.

"We were forced to bring Archana with us because her in-laws were not even caring her when she was ill. Archana suffered brain stroke on November 26 last and was admitted to Apollo Hospital. But, my son-in-law discharged her six days later on November 30 and took her to his house. There she suffered further complications."

"My daughter was a diabetic. But, they used to give her not adequate food. I had to request Anjan's father by touching his feet to give food to my daughter," said Raghunath.

He did not rule out the possibility of Anjan wanting to marry some other girl.

"Last night, Archana called up her father-in-law to take her home. But, he refused and she took two sleeping tablets (double the dose). She was sleeping in her room. She must have left our house at 3am when all of us were asleep. She might have walked up to the level crossing in the darkness," Raghunath said.
