Ranchi: A CBI court on Wednesday handed Lalu Prasad his third conviction in a fodder scam case, packing him off to prison for five years with fellow former chief minister Jagannath Mishra.
The two were also fined Rs 10 lakh each.
The special CBI court of S.S. Prasad held the two Bihar leaders guilty of shielding the accused and patronising the misappropriation of Rs 37.62 crore from the Chaibasa treasury during 1992 and 1993.
Lalu Prasad, earlier handed a three-and-a-half-year term and fined Rs 10 lakh in another fodder case related to illegal withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deogarh treasury, has been in Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi since December 23. The RJD chief's first conviction was in 2013.
Among the others convicted on Wednesday were former Jharkhand chief secretary Sajal Chakraborty.
CBI lawyer B.M.P. Singh said the court held Lalu Prasad and Mishra guilty under various sections of the penal code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. "The court pronounced a jail term of five years and Rs 5 lakh fine for each act. Both jail terms will run concurrently," Singh said.
In case they fail to deposit the fine, they will have to undergo two additional years of simple imprisonment," said CBI lawyer B.M.P. Singh.
