Bhubaneswar, Nov. 5: A few students of BJB College today locked its main gate for around an hour demanding the immediate arrest of those who beat up Sanatan Sethy, a second-year B.Com student, on Saturday.

The protesters opened the gate only after the police and college authorities promised to take action against the guilty.

A group of students attacked and injured Sethy because of an old rivalry that got aggravated after the students’ union election results were announced last month.

Sources said Sethi was a supporter of Sibrabrata Nayak, who was elected the students’ union president. The accused attacked Sethi for extending support to Nayak. Nayak alleged that his rival group, led by Amit Jena, attacked Sethi. “We have lodged a complaint with the Badagada police, but they are yet to take action,” said Nayak.

On the other hand, Jena has also lodged a complaint with the police accusing Nayak of stopping him near the general hostel of the college yesterday and firing shots in the air to terrorise him.

“I had asked the students involved to give me written complaints but they have not obliged so far,” said principal of the college S.C. Pattanaik, adding that he would constitute a disciplinary committee to look into the matter.

“We are investigating the allegations,” said inspector in-charge of Badagada police station Janardan Padhee.
