Bhubaneswar, June 19: A newly married woman today committed suicide in the Satyabhamapur area near Tankapani road following an alleged family dispute.
Sources said 19-year-old Queeny Mantri alias Sakhi ended her life by taking poison. The police have detained her husband Bijay Kumar Mohanty and father-in-law Damodar Mohanty and they are being questioned.
According to the in-laws of the woman, she performed her household chores in the morning but around 9am foam was seen coming out of her mouth. “When we asked her what the matter was, she could not say anything. We soon rushed her to a private clinic nearby. The doctors there asked us to take her to the Capital Hospital,” said Damodar, who works as a hawker in the city, adding that the doctors there declared her dead within minutes after she reached there.
The hospital authorities then informed the police and the latter detained the husband and the father-in-law of the woman. The relatives and family members of the deceased were then informed about the matter. Later, the girl’s aunt, who resides in Saliasahi area in the city, reached the spot.
According to sources, the deceased had married 23-year-old Bijay from Satyabhamapur on the outskirts of the city eight months ago. While Bijay had been working as a car driver for a doctor, the woman used to work as a housemaid for the doctor in Tankapani road area.
Theirs was a love marriage. The woman was from Daringibari area in Phulbani district and was staying with her aunt here in the city.
After marriage the couple were staying with Bijay’s family on the outskirts of the city. While Queeny had been forcing her husband to take a house on rent in the city and stay there, her husband’s family members did not want it.
“As my son’s earning was very limited and it was difficult for the family to sustain itself in the village, I used to tell them that they would face problems in the city due to low income. This sometimes created problems for us. But I never thought that it would make her commit suicide. Besides this everybody in our house loved her,” said the father-in-law.
He added said that he was not aware if his son and daughter-in-law had a quarrel the previous night.
The girl’s aunt later reached the police outpost inside the hospital. Then the matter was handed over to the Balianta police under whose jurisdiction the area falls. Police said that the girl’s aunt had been making allegation against her in-laws.
“Besides that we are waiting for the girl’s parents to reach here from Phulbani. We have kept the body in the hospital morgue. After the parents of the girl reach, we will send the body for post mortem. We have also detained the husband and father in law of the woman,” said a police officer of Balianta police station.
