Taekwondo victory for Cuttack

With 6.5 points, Rajesh Nayak of Puri emerges champion at the Odisha State U-25 Chess Championship in Bhubaneswar while rower Sanjukta Dung Dung finds place in the national team

Cuttack district emerged as the overall champion with 182 points in the 33rd State Kyorugi and 6th State Poomsae Taekwondo Championships, which recently concluded in Cuttack. Bhubaneswar and Ganjam districts were adjudged as the runners up and second runners up, respectively. Swayamshiv Sahoo of Kalahandi was awarded as best player of the tournament.

Rower's feat

State rower Sanjukta Dung Dung has been named in the national rowing team, which will take part in the 18th Asian Games at Palembang in Indonesia, from August 18 to 24. Sanjukta will take part in the women coxless pair and coxless four events. She bagged gold in the Indoor National Rowing Championship 2017 and claimed double gold medals in the Indoor National Rowing Championship 2016. In the same year, she grabbed four gold medals in the National Rowing Championship. She finished fifth in the 2014 Asian Games held at Incheon in South Korea.

Scouting event

Some 851 footballers from Sundargarh, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack took part in the two-day scouting programme conducted by Football Association of Odisha at different venues on Sunday. The event was held at Sundargarh Stadium, KIIT school ground and Bidanasi Ground. The next phase of the event will be held in Sambalpur at VSS Stadium from August 11 and 12. Players from Sambalpur, Deogarh, Baragarh, Subarnapur, Balangir and Boudh districts are likely to take part in it.

Power punch

A team of 10 members from Odisha comprising eight players and two officials bagged eight medals, including four gold, two silver and two bronze, in the second National Savate Championship, which recently concluded in Chandigarh. Altogether, 200 players and 27 officials from 18 states took part in the three-day meet. It is for the first time Odisha took part in National Savate Championship after getting trained under Pruthwiraj Harichandan, founder and general secretary of Savate Association of Odisha.

Billiards champion

Subrat Das of Odisha emerged billiards champion in the Steve Davis Cup, which concluded in Ranchi recently. In the finals, Subrat defeated Yash Kinger 400-201. With this victory, Subrat became the first player in Odisha's billiards and snooker history to win an open billiards title outside the state.

Checkmate

Rajesh Nayak of Puri emerged champion of the Odisha State U-25 Chess Championship, which concluded recently in Bhubaneswar. Rajesh took the top honours with a total of 6.5 points. Rakesh Kumar Nayak of Khurda and Susobhit Das of Sundargarh scored six points each, but they were placed second and third respectively on the basis of a tie-breaker. Vaibhav Mishra of Puri finished fourth with 5.5 points. Bhubaneswar North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra was the chief guest at the meet. This apart, Abhijeet Kumar of St. Arnold's High School in Bhubaneswar emerged champion at the 14th Schools' Open Chess Championship, which concluded recently in Bhubaneswar. Abhijeet clinched the title with 6.5 points. Tanmay Kumar of Stewart School finished runners-up with six points. Jagdish Kumar Ghadai of DAV Public School, Kalinga Nagar, also with six points, was placed third place on the basis of a tie-breaker.
