Bhubaneswar: A case of abetment to suicide has been filed following the death of a student at the hostel of DAV School of Business Management here on Tuesday.
Police had initially lodged a case of unnatural death, but it was changed following a complaint lodged by Keya Banerjee, the mother of Taniya who was found hanging in his hostel room.
Keya had accused some of Taniya's co-boarders of branding her daughter a thief. This, she said, forced the 19-year-old Plus Three second-year BBA student to commit suicide.
"Taniya's mother has not mentioned any names in her complaint. So, we have registered a case against students and officials of the institute under section 306 of the IPC," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.
A police team had visited the hostel and recorded the statements of at least 10 hostel mates of Taniya, the warden, security guards and institute officials.
Keya alleged that her daughter's co-boarders had accused her of stealing shampoo and lipstick.
"We are feeling guilty as we could not save her from taking the extreme step," said principal of the institute D.N. Mishra.
