Bhubaneswar, Aug. 13: A 19-year-old student of Kamala Nehru Women’s College here allegedly attempted suicide by consuming mosquito repellent this morning.
Friends and teachers of the girl admitted her to Capital Hospital after she fell unconscious. She is now being treated at the intensive care unit.
It is yet to be ascertained what led her to consume the poisonous liquid. Doctors attending to her also confirmed that she had consumed liquid mosquito repellent.
“Accordingly, we have administered her medicines and her condition is stable,” Biswojit Mohanty, the doctor at the hospital, said.
The girl, who hails from Niali in Cuttack, is studying in the third-year of Plus Three commerce. She stays with her aunt at Rental Colony in IRC Village.
Zoology lecturer Tara Prasad Mohapatra, who had taken the girl to the hospital, said she had come to college around 9.15am, but started feeling uneasy around 10am during the class. “On being informed that she had consumed something and fallen unconscious, we immediately rushed her to hospital,” said Mohapatra.
Sukanti Jena, a friend of the girl, said they had gone to tuition in the morning and around 8.30am the class was over. They then went to college. But, on way to college, Trupti got down from the autorickshaw near SBI at Unit-I to get some medicine.
“She joined us in college a little later. But, during the class she started feeling uneasy. She was tense and said she had eaten something. Before we could get more information from her, she had fallen unconscious,” said Sukanti.
However, Capital police said there was no report about the incident with them. The college authorities said they would lodge police complaint only after discussing with the girl’s family members. Sources said the college principal did not go to meet the girl today and that infuriated the students.
