Bhubaneswar, Sept. 26: Campaign for the upcoming students’ union polls ended today. Many presidential candidates conducted rallies in their respective universities and colleges with great fervour.
Elections are scheduled on Monday, and as per convention, all candidates must wind up their campaign before the ‘What I Stand For’ meet which is to be held tomorrow morning at 8 am. It gives the candidates a perfect platform to speak about their vision and seek votes in their favour.
At Utkal University, aspiring candidates and their supporters took part in rallies and visited classrooms and hostels. “We are also preparing for tomorrow’s meet. The candidate has to appear confident before the crowd and we understand that it will have an impact on the students,” said Manas Kumar Sahoo, a presidential candidate.
At Ramadevi College, candidates and their supporters danced to the tune of Bollywood songs to garner support. A few candidates were seen distributing food packets to woo the voters.
“Tomorrow, we need to motivate the students to vote. Because of the upcoming Durga Puja holidays, many outstation students are leaving for home which can be quite a dampener,” said Itishree, an ardent supporter of a presidential candidate.
Candidates at the Sambalpur University were also busy visiting classes to showcase themselves. Similar was the scene in the Government Women’s College and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose College in Sambalpur.
“I will interact with the students personally and seek their support. I have fought for the development of the university. The students will definitely support me,” said one of the presidential candidates of the Sambalpur University, Avinash Patel.
“We are not leaving anything to chance and do not want to risk a single vote,” said Manoj, a supporter of Sakshi Kaur at the Municipal College in Rourkela.
In spite of the fact that the poll bound colleges have not witnessed any untoward incident, police is keeping alert.
“Earlier when elections were taking place on different dates, the possibility of campus violence was more as supporters from other colleges would converge at one place but now the situation is different and the campuses are trouble free”, said a police officer.
“We are strictly following the guidelines of the Lingdoh Commission to conduct a smooth and fair students’ union election. Superintendents and wardens of the hostels are patrolling at night,” the authorities said.
Berhampur University was restive after two groups of students clashed with each other.
