Bhubaneswar, June 15: An ensemble of artworks by eminent as well as promising young artists from all over the country is attracting art aficionados in the city at an exhibition in the capital city.

Titled Together, the exhibition on at the Rashtriya Lalit Kala Akademi offers a varied range of styles in painting and sculpture.

The art show features works of 71 artists. Well-established names such as Jai Zharotia, Pranam Singh, Rabindra Salve, Vijayendra Sharma, Yusuf and many more renowned veteran artists are displaying their works here.

Among the younger lot, Hemanta Moharana, Nilanshubala Sasmal, Kantakishore Moharana and other gifted painters and sculptors too are featuring.

As you enter the gallery, be ready to be floored by the beautiful paintings and sculptures. Yusuf’s subtle use of colours are intriguing in a painting that has the effect of drawing on ruled paper. Ramahari Jena’s take on an Odissi dancer is striking too.

Jena has used smooth strokes of vermilion shades in the background and the dancer is highlighted in the fore, as if questioning the transformation of the dance form over the years.

In the feast of creativity, there are also some concepts that make the artwork distinct.

As you look at the painting of a young Tamil girl from the behind in the work of Chennai’s Ramsuresh, for example, you find yourself wishing you could see her face.

Baladev Moharatha has experimented with traditional painting that he is known for giving a contemporary angle to art based on lifestyle.

Among other striking artworks is youngster Kantakishore’s closed packet made of marble.

The artist has interestingly installed very lifelike cockroaches in his work. Veteran artist Rabi Ratha’s bronze work that depicts the tussle among people to reach the top is remarkable.

The exhibition offers plenty of experiments in art for viewers to relish.

“There are so many paintings that leave an indelible imprint on the mind. I also liked the sculptures that have been exhibited at the show,” said Amit Mohapatra, a visitor.

The group of artists, also known as “Together”, has organised the exhibition.

“We started as a group that wanted to make Bhubaneswar an eventful place for artists. There were not many exhibitions back then. But during the five-year journey, after enduring many struggles, we have been successful in organising regular art shows,” said artist Manash Jena, the organiser of the event.

“We also received patronage from many art enthusiasts in the city over the years. Through this exhibition we wish to further our efforts by bringing in senior artists and at the same time giving a platform to young artists,” said the artist, who has also showcased his own work at the exhibition. The exhibition is on till June 20.
