Bhubaneswar, Aug. 16: The state government has instructed all college teachers to submit an undertaking that they do not take private tuitions. If the teachers fail to do so, they would not be issued their salaries.
The department of higher education sent a direction in this regard to principal of all government, non-government and aided colleges of the state.
“It has been that in spite of repeated warnings issued by the government from time to time, some college teachers have been engaged in private coaching and tuition. This vitiates the academic atmosphere of the colleges. The time has now come when we all realise the evil effects of private coaching and work together with concerted effort to restore the glory of academic institutions,” the letter read.
The letter has asked all the principals to be extremely vigilant in this regard and ensure that no teacher is involved in private teaching in any manner. To ensure this, the teachers must submit an undertaking at the commencement of academic session that they are not engaged in any private tuition or coaching.
The principal will issue the salary of the teachers from the month of September onwards after the receipt of such undertaking.
The principal must submit the compliance report through the website of the higher education department in this regard.
“If a teacher is involved in such an act, it should be immediately reported to the authorities and such deviation will be severely dealt with. This effort is believed to go a long way in ensuring quality education in educational institutions,” said Bimal Prasad Nanda, director, higher education.
The shocking impact of such cases came to the fore after the sensational Richa Mishra suicide case. The 19-year-old undergraduate commerce student of BJB (autonomous) College in Bhubaneswar, had committed suicide on November 18, 2005, leaving behind a note in which she alleged that she had deliberately been awarded less marks because she had refused to join private tuition of three faculty members of the college. She had also requested her father to take action against them.
